The least of these.
Three parables close the great sermon: ten bridesmaids and their lamps, three servants and their master's money, and a final scene where the King of all the earth sorts the nations by a single, startling measure, what they did for the hungry, the stranger, the prisoner, the least.

If chapter twenty-four asked us to stay awake, chapter twenty-five shows us what staying awake looks like. It is not idle staring; it is oil kept ready, gifts put to work, and mercy shown to the overlooked. The three parables move from being prepared, to being faithful, to the great surprise at the end, when the King reveals that all along he was hidden in the hungry and the sick and the imprisoned, and that what we did for them, we did for him.

The ten virgins.
Ten young women take their lamps to meet the bridegroom; five bring extra oil, five do not. The bridegroom is delayed, and they all fall asleep. At midnight the cry goes up, and the foolish find their lamps going out, with no oil and no time to borrow any.
While they run to buy more, the door is shut, and they are left outside knocking. Watch therefore, he says, for you know neither the day nor the hour. The wise ones were not better people; they were simply ready, having prepared in the daylight for a night they could not predict. Some things cannot be borrowed at the last minute.

The talents.
A man going on a journey entrusts his servants with talents, five, two, and one, each according to his ability. The first two trade and double what they were given; the master's words to each are the same, well done, good and faithful servant.
But the third, afraid, buries his one talent in the ground and gives it back untouched, and is condemned, not for losing it but for refusing to risk it. The gifts we are given are not for hoarding against the master's return; they are for using, now, in the waiting. Faithfulness is not playing it safe. It is putting what we have been given to work.
"Do not withhold good from those to whom it is due, when it is in your power to do it."
Amid all the warning of shut doors and outer darkness, there is this, and it is the line every weary servant is working toward. Not well done because you were spectacular, or because you doubled the most, but because you were faithful with what you were handed. The reward is not a bonus or a promotion; it is joy, the master's own joy, and an invitation to step inside it. Everything the chapter asks of us, the oil, the risk, the mercy, is aimed at hearing these three words, and finding the door held open instead of shut.
The sheep and the goats.
Then the curtain lifts on the end of all things. The Son of Man sits on his throne and gathers all the nations, separating them as a shepherd separates sheep from goats. To the sheep he says, come, you blessed; for I was hungry and you fed me, a stranger and you welcomed me, sick and in prison and you came to me.
When did we see you so, they ask, bewildered. As you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, he answers, you did it to me. And the others are condemned for the same reason in reverse, for the mercy they never gave. The King was disguised the whole time, in everyone the world steps over. What we did to them, we were doing to him.
"Whoever is generous to the poor lends to the LORD, and he will repay him."
Looking at the least of these.
The genealogy looked back. The geography looked out. The river looked up. The wilderness looked ahead. The mountain looked inward. Chapter six looked beyond. Chapter seven looked down. Chapter eight looked closer. Chapter nine looked around. Chapter ten looked outward. Chapter eleven looked to him. Chapter twelve looked across. Chapter thirteen looked beneath. Chapter fourteen looked into the dark. Chapter fifteen looked past the surface. Chapter sixteen looked him in the face. Chapter seventeen looked into the light. Chapter eighteen looked among us. Chapter nineteen looked at what we hold. Chapter twenty looked at the wage. Chapter twenty-one looked for fruit. Chapter twenty-two looked at love. Chapter twenty-three looked at the whitewash. Chapter twenty-four looked for his coming. And chapter twenty-five looks at the least of these, the hungry, the stranger, the sick, the imprisoned, and finds the King himself standing among them, keeping the only score that finally counts.
The three parables are really one. The oil, the talents, and the cup of water are all the same currency, a life spent ready and useful and merciful while the Master is away. And the great reversal at the end is that he was never as far away as he seemed. He was in the soup kitchen and the prison cell and the spare room, wearing the face of everyone we were tempted to overlook. The waiting was never empty time to be endured. It was the very place we were meeting him, in the least of these, all along.
