The greatest commandment.
A king throws a wedding feast the invited refuse to attend, and then a parade of clever enemies try to trap Jesus with their hardest questions. He answers every one, and then asks the question that silences them, and at the center of it all sits a single command: love.

This is a chapter of traps. The Pharisees, the Herodians, the Sadducees take turns trying to catch Jesus in a sentence, on taxes, on the resurrection, on the law, and each time the trap springs shut on empty air. But underneath the verbal fencing lies the real subject. When he is finally asked which commandment is greatest, he gives the answer the whole Bible has been circling: love God, love your neighbor. Everything else hangs on these.

The wedding feast.
A king prepares a wedding feast for his son and sends servants to call the invited guests, who will not come; some ignore it, some kill the messengers. So the king sends his servants into the streets to bring in anyone they can find, good and bad alike, until the hall is full.
But one guest is there without a wedding garment, and is cast out. The feast is free, but it is not casual; you cannot come on your own terms. The door is flung open to the unlikeliest people, and still the warning stands at the end: many are called, but few are chosen.
"Come, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters... come, buy and eat!"
The line lands like a stone in still water. The invitation goes out wide, wider than anyone expects, to the people off the streets, to the good and the bad alike. And yet there is the man with no wedding garment, thrown into the dark, and the unsettling verdict that closes the parable. The grace is free, but it is not weightless; to be called is not yet to be clothed. It is a warning to the comfortable, not to mistake an invitation in hand for a seat at the table secured, and to come, when called, dressed in something other than ourselves.
Render to Caesar.
They try to trap him on taxes: is it lawful to pay Caesar? He asks for a coin. Whose image is on it? Caesar's. Then render to Caesar what is Caesar's, and to God what is God's. The coin bears Caesar's image; but we bear God's, and he is asking for all of it.
The Sadducees try next, with a riddle about a woman married to seven brothers, meant to make resurrection look absurd. He tells them they know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God. God is not the God of the dead but of the living. One by one the traps close on nothing.

Love God, love your neighbor.
Finally a lawyer asks which commandment is the greatest. Jesus does not hesitate: love the Lord your God with all your heart and soul and mind. This is the great and first. And a second is like it: love your neighbor as yourself.
On these two commandments, he says, depend all the Law and the Prophets. The entire towering structure of Scripture hangs from two hooks, and both of them are love. Then he turns the tables with his own question about whose son the Christ is, and from that day no one dares ask him anything more.

Looking at love.
The genealogy looked back. The geography looked out. The river looked up. The wilderness looked ahead. The mountain looked inward. Chapter six looked beyond. Chapter seven looked down. Chapter eight looked closer. Chapter nine looked around. Chapter ten looked outward. Chapter eleven looked to him. Chapter twelve looked across. Chapter thirteen looked beneath. Chapter fourteen looked into the dark. Chapter fifteen looked past the surface. Chapter sixteen looked him in the face. Chapter seventeen looked into the light. Chapter eighteen looked among us. Chapter nineteen looked at what we hold. Chapter twenty looked at the wage. Chapter twenty-one looked for fruit. And chapter twenty-two looks at love, past the traps and the clever questions, to the two commandments the whole of Scripture hangs upon.
The enemies come armed with their hardest puzzles, hoping to reduce him to a contradiction. But every question about taxes and marriage and law turns out to be the wrong question, and when the right one is finally asked, the answer is almost shockingly simple. Not a doctrine to master or a loophole to find, but a love to give, upward to God with everything we are, and outward to the person beside us. Get those two right, and the rest of the Law and the Prophets comes along behind. Miss them, and no amount of cleverness will save you.
