Six days after the talk of the cross, three of them follow Jesus up a mountain and watch him blaze with light, with Moses and Elijah beside him and the Father's own voice in the cloud. Then they come straight back down into a valley of failure and need, and the road to Jerusalem keeps unwinding underfoot.

For one moment the curtain pulls back and three disciples see Jesus as he truly is, shining, attended by the law and the prophets, declared by God. It is the answer to Peter's confession, given from heaven instead of from a fisherman. And then it is over, and they have to go back down. The whole chapter lives in that descent, from the brightest thing they will ever see to a frightened father, a faith too small, and a second word about dying. The glory is real. So is the valley. Both are the road.
Up to the glory, and down to the valley.

Transfigured.
He takes Peter, James, and John up a high mountain alone, and there he is changed in front of them. His face shines like the sun, his clothes turn white as light, and suddenly Moses and Elijah are there, talking with him, the law and the prophets in conversation with the one they always pointed toward. Peter, overwhelmed, blurts out that they should build three tents and stay.
Then a bright cloud overshadows them, and the same voice that spoke at the river speaks again: "This is my beloved Son, with whom I am well pleased; listen to him." The disciples fall on their faces, terrified. And Jesus comes and touches them, the way you would wake a child, and says, "Rise, and have no fear." When they look up, the glory is gone. They see no one but Jesus only.

Elijah has come.
On the way down he tells them to keep the vision to themselves until the Son of Man has risen from the dead. They are puzzled: the scribes say Elijah must come first, before the Messiah. If Jesus is the Christ, where is Elijah? They have just seen him on the mountain, but that is not what they mean.
Jesus tells them Elijah has already come, and no one recognized him; instead they did to him whatever they pleased. And then the line that turns the comfort cold: so also the Son of Man will certainly suffer at their hands. The disciples understand he is speaking of John the Baptist, beheaded at a king's table a few chapters back. The forerunner was killed. The pattern is set. The one he announced is walking the same road.
"Behold, I will send you Elijah the prophet before the great and awesome day of the LORD comes."
At the foot of the mountain.
They come down into a crowd and a crisis. A father kneels before Jesus: his son suffers terrible seizures, and the disciples who stayed behind could not heal him. The contrast is brutal, glory at the top of the mountain, helplessness at the bottom. Jesus sighs over a faithless and twisted generation, then simply rebukes the demon, and the boy is healed from that moment.
Privately the disciples ask why they failed. His answer is gentle and piercing: because of your little faith. And then the famous promise, that faith the size of a single mustard seed could tell a mountain to move, and it would, that nothing would be impossible. The problem at the foot of the mountain was never the size of the demon. It was the size of their trust.
"They have dealt corruptly with him… they are a crooked and twisted generation."
He said it once after the confession, and Peter tried to argue. Here he says it again, plainly, with no room left to misread it, and this time there is no argument. Matthew simply notes that they were greatly distressed. They have seen the glory now; they know exactly who is saying these words. And that is what makes the sentence unbearable. The brighter the mountain, the heavier the news that the shining one is walking toward his own death, on purpose, and will not be talked out of it.
The coin in the fish.
Back in Capernaum, the collectors of the temple tax ask Peter whether his teacher pays it. Peter says yes, then Jesus heads him off with a question: from whom do kings collect taxes, their own children, or others? From others, of course. The sons go free. The point lands quietly: this is his Father's house. The Son of the King owes nothing to it.
And yet, so as not to give offense, he tells Peter to go to the sea, throw in a hook, and open the mouth of the first fish he catches; inside will be a coin, exactly enough for the two of them. The one who owns the temple, and the sea, and the fish, and the silver in its mouth, chooses to pay a tax he does not owe rather than cause a needless stumble. Even his freedom, he spends on others.
"each shall give… half a shekel as an offering to the LORD."
Looking into the light.
The genealogy looked back. The geography looked out. The river looked up. The wilderness looked ahead. The mountain looked inward. Chapter six looked beyond. Chapter seven looked down. Chapter eight looked closer. Chapter nine looked around. Chapter ten looked outward. Chapter eleven looked to him. Chapter twelve looked across. Chapter thirteen looked beneath. Chapter fourteen looked into the dark. Chapter fifteen looked past the surface. Chapter sixteen looked him in the face. And chapter seventeen looks up the mountain into the light, and then walks back down into the valley where the rest of us are still standing.
Peter wanted to build tents and stay in the light, and who could blame him. But the voice did not say "stay here." It said "listen to him," and the very next thing he says is that he is going to die. That is the shape of the whole chapter. You cannot keep the mountain; you can only carry it down. The glory was given not to keep them from the valley but to send them into it, with enough light at their backs to trust a face they have now seen shining, even when the trail leads down, and the faith feels no bigger than a seed.
