Matthew 15

From the heart.

It begins as an argument about washing hands and ends with thousands fed on a mountainside. In between, Jesus moves the whole question of what makes a person clean from the outside to the inside, and a woman everyone would have called an outsider shows more faith than the experts who came to test him.

A note before we begin

The religious leaders arrive from Jerusalem with a complaint about ritual, and by the end of the chapter Jesus has quietly redrawn every line they came to defend. Clean and unclean, insider and outsider, who belongs at the table and who does not, each one turns out to be measured not by the hands or the menu or the bloodline, but by the heart. Watch where the bread goes, and watch whose faith he praises, and you will see the kingdom widening.

A rule about the outside

The washed hands.

Matthew 15:1-9 ESV

Pharisees and scribes come all the way from Jerusalem with a question that is really an accusation: why do your disciples break the tradition of the elders? They do not wash their hands before they eat. It is not about hygiene; it is about a whole inherited system of ritual purity, and the disciples are not keeping it.

Jesus answers a question with a sharper question. Why do you break the commandment of God for the sake of your tradition? He names an example: a loophole called Corban, which lets a person declare their money "given to God" and so escape the plain command to honor and provide for their aging parents. They have used a tradition to cancel a commandment. The outside is spotless. The substance is gone.

This is the line the whole chapter turns on. It is possible to be flawless on the surface and hollow underneath, to say all the right words while the heart that should mean them has wandered off somewhere else. Jesus is not against reverence; he is against reverence that has become a costume. And the warning lands closest not on the obvious sinner, but on the religious, the careful, the ones most certain their hands are clean.

The real source of defilement

What comes out.

Matthew 15:10-20 ESV

Then he calls the crowd and says something that must have sounded almost scandalous: it is not what goes into the mouth that defiles a person, but what comes out of it. The disciples nervously point out that he has offended the Pharisees. He is unmoved. "Every plant that my heavenly Father has not planted will be rooted up. Let them alone; they are blind guides."

Peter asks him to explain, and he does. What goes into the stomach passes on through; it touches nothing that matters. But what comes out of the mouth comes from the heart, and out of the heart come evil thoughts, murder, adultery, theft, false witness, slander. These are what defile a person. Eating with unwashed hands does not. The problem was never on the outside. It never is.

Faith from an outsider

Even the crumbs.

Matthew 15:21-28 ESV

He withdraws to the region of Tyre and Sidon, Gentile country, and a Canaanite woman, the kind of person his critics would have called unclean by birth, comes crying out for mercy. Her daughter is tormented. At first Jesus is silent, then he says he was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel. When she kneels and begs, he tests her with a hard saying: it is not right to take the children's bread and throw it to the dogs.

She does not flinch. "Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters' table." It is one of the most remarkable replies in the Gospels, faith and humility and wit all at once. She does not dispute her place; she simply trusts there is more than enough at this table for a single crumb to reach her. And Jesus, who has just taught that the heart is what counts, finds in this outsider exactly the heart the insiders lacked. "O woman, great is your faith!" Her daughter is healed that instant.

The God of Israel, glorified

On the mountain.

Matthew 15:29-31 ESV

He goes up on a mountain beside the Sea of Galilee and sits down, and great crowds come, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute, and many others, and lay them at his feet. And he heals them.

The crowd watches the mute speak and the lame walk and the blind see, and Matthew records their response in a striking phrase: they glorified the God of Israel. Here, in this Gentile-edged region, the very thing Isaiah promised the Messiah would do is happening in front of them, and people who were never supposed to be near this table are praising the God whose table it is.

A second table in the wilderness

The four thousand.

Matthew 15:32-39 ESV

Jesus has compassion on the crowd: they have been with him three days and have nothing to eat, and he will not send them away hungry. The disciples, who watched him feed five thousand only a chapter ago, still ask where they could possibly get enough bread in such a desolate place. He asks what they have. Seven loaves, and a few small fish.

Again he gives thanks, breaks the bread, and gives it to the disciples to hand out, and four thousand men, besides women and children, eat and are satisfied, with seven baskets of broken pieces left over. The first feeding was for the crowds of Israel. This one, on the far side of the lake, is most likely for a Gentile crowd, the same hands, the same compassion, the same overflowing bread, now reaching the very people the chapter began by shutting out.

A closing reflection

Looking past the surface.

The genealogy looked back. The geography looked out. The river looked up. The wilderness looked ahead. The mountain looked inward. Chapter six looked beyond. Chapter seven looked down. Chapter eight looked closer. Chapter nine looked around. Chapter ten looked outward. Chapter eleven looked to him. Chapter twelve looked across. Chapter thirteen looked beneath. Chapter fourteen looked into the dark. And chapter fifteen looks past the surface, past the washed hands and the kept rules, to the heart underneath, where both the defilement and the faith actually live.

The chapter is built like a hinge. On one side, religious experts with clean hands and far-off hearts, who honor God with their lips and quietly cancel his commands with their traditions. On the other, a foreign woman with no standing at all, whose heart is so full of faith that a crumb is enough for her. Between them, Jesus moves the whole measure of a person from the outside to the inside, and then proves it by spreading a table in the wilderness for exactly the people the experts would have turned away. The kingdom is not for the ones who look clean. It is for the ones whose hearts have turned back toward home.
