The line is drawn.
This is where the grumbling becomes a plot. Two clashes over the Sabbath, an accusation that he works for the devil, a demand for proof. Through it all Jesus refuses to be anything but gentle, and quietly draws a line that everyone, in the end, will have to stand on one side of.

After the rest of chapter eleven, chapter twelve is jarring. The opposition that has been simmering finally boils over into a conspiracy to kill him. The confrontations come one after another: the Sabbath, the source of his power, the demand for a sign. And in the middle of it all, Matthew slips in a portrait of the gentlest servant who ever lived. Both things are true at once.
With him, or against him.

Lord of the Sabbath.
It begins with hungry men. The disciples pluck heads of grain on the Sabbath, and the Pharisees pounce. Jesus answers with scripture: David ate the holy bread when he was hungry, the priests work every Sabbath in the temple, and "I desire mercy, and not sacrifice." Then the verdict that reframes everything: "The Son of Man is lord of the Sabbath."
In the synagogue, a man with a withered hand becomes the test. Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath? Of course, says Jesus: you would rescue a sheep from a pit, and a person is worth far more than a sheep. He heals the hand. And the response to this act of mercy tells you where the chapter is going: the Pharisees go out and begin to plot how to destroy him.
"So the priest gave him the holy bread, for there was no bread there but the bread of the Presence."
The moment the plot to kill him is set in motion, Matthew reaches back to Isaiah and shows us who Jesus actually is. Not a man who breaks what is already bent, or snuffs out what is barely burning. The powerful are conspiring against him, and he answers by being gentle with the weak. The reed he refuses to break may be you.
By whose power?
When Jesus frees a blind and mute man from a demon, the crowds begin to wonder: could this be the Son of David? The Pharisees have to explain the undeniable away, so they make the worst possible charge: he casts out demons by Beelzebul, the prince of demons. They call the work of God the work of the devil.
Jesus exposes the absurdity. A kingdom divided against itself collapses; Satan does not cast out Satan. If he drives out demons by the Spirit of God, then the kingdom of God has arrived among them. And here he draws the line of the whole chapter: "Whoever is not with me is against me." There is no neutral ground left to stand on.

The sign of Jonah.
The scribes and Pharisees, who have just attributed his miracles to the devil, now ask for a sign, as if they had not seen enough. Jesus refuses to perform on demand. "An evil and adulterous generation seeks for a sign, but no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah."
And then, here in the middle of Galilee, he names the cross. As Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the fish, so the Son of Man will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. The pagans of Nineveh repented at Jonah; the queen of the South crossed the world for Solomon's wisdom. Something greater than both is standing right in front of them, and they are asking for a trick.

The true family.
While he is still speaking, word comes that his mother and brothers are standing outside, wanting him. It is the perfect setup for a sentimental moment. Instead Jesus uses it to say something that must have stunned the room: "Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?"
Then he stretches out his hand toward his disciples, the ordinary people who have been listening and following, and answers his own question. "Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother and sister and mother." After a chapter spent drawing a line, he tells us how to end up on the right side of it. Not by blood, not by status, but by doing the will of the Father. The family is open to anyone who will come in.
"I delight to do your will, O my God; your law is within my heart."
Looking across.
The genealogy looked back. The geography looked out. The river looked up. The wilderness looked ahead. The mountain looked inward. Chapter six looked beyond. Chapter seven looked down. Chapter eight looked closer. Chapter nine looked around. Chapter ten looked outward. Chapter eleven looked to him. And chapter twelve looks across, at the line his presence has drawn, and at the two kinds of people standing on either side of it.
On one side are people who saw the withered hand restored, the demon cast out, the mercy and the power, and chose to call it the work of the devil and plot a murder. On the other are people with no credentials at all, who simply do what the Father asks and find themselves called his family. The terrifying thing about this chapter is how little the two groups differ on the outside. The difference is entirely a matter of which way the heart has turned. The same gentle servant who will not break a bruised reed is the line you cannot avoid choosing about.
