THE COVENANT MADE PERSONAL

No longer Abram, but Abraham.

When Abram is ninety-nine, God appears as El Shaddai, God Almighty, and turns the promise into a sworn, everlasting covenant. And the first thing the Almighty does is reach into a man's very identity and rewrite it: Abram, exalted father, becomes Abraham, father of a multitude, a name of pure promise spoken over a body that flatly contradicts it. Sarai becomes Sarah; a sign is cut into the flesh; and a son is named before he is conceived. God names his people not by their past, but by their future.

A NOTE BEFORE WE BEGIN

Genesis 15 gave us the covenant believed and sealed in fire; Genesis 17, more than twenty years later, gives us the covenant made formal, personal, and everlasting. Here God attaches his own name to the promise, El Shaddai, and attaches new names to Abraham and Sarah, and gives the whole thing a permanent sign in the flesh. It is a chapter about identity: who God is, and who, by covenant, his people now are. Watch how the Almighty's first move is not a display of raw power but an act of renaming, taking a barren old man and a barren old woman and calling them the father and mother of nations, long before there is any evidence to support it. And do not miss the laughter, because the doubt Abraham laughs with will become the name of the child who silences it.

THE SHAPE OF THE CHAPTER

The covenant made personal.

It begins above, with the glory of El Shaddai, God Almighty, who binds himself in an everlasting covenant. Beneath him, the heart of the chapter: two renamings, side by side. Abram is crossed through and becomes Abraham, father of a multitude; Sarai is crossed through and becomes Sarah, mother of nations, their identities rewritten from barren past to promised future. Below, the sign of the covenant is cut into the flesh of the household, in every generation, and at the end of the line waits the named promise, Isaac, he laughs.

FIRST

I am God Almighty.

Genesis 17:1-2 ESV

Thirteen silent years pass after the birth of Ishmael, and then, when Abram is ninety-nine, God appears again. This time he gives himself a name: "I am God Almighty," El Shaddai, the God whose power has no limit. To a man whose body is long past fathering children, that name is the whole point. The promise will not depend on Abram's strength, which is gone, but on the strength of the Almighty, which never fails. "Walk before me, and be blameless," God says, and then, "I will make my covenant between me and you."

Notice the order. God reveals who he is, El Shaddai, before he asks anything of Abram, and the command to walk blamelessly rests entirely on the character of the God who gives it. This is always the shape of grace: God tells us who he is, binds himself to us in covenant, and only then calls us to live in light of it. The Almighty does not recruit the strong; he commits himself to the weak and becomes their strength.

SECOND

No longer Abram.

Genesis 17:3-8 ESV

Then God does something startling: he changes the man's name. "No longer shall your name be called Abram, but your name shall be Abraham, for I have made you the father of a multitude of nations." Abram meant exalted father, a quietly painful name for a ninety-nine-year-old with a single son by a slave. Abraham means father of a multitude, a name that is pure promise, spoken over a body that completely contradicts it. From this day on, every time anyone says his name, they say the promise aloud.

This is what the covenant does: it reaches past what God will give Abraham and rewrites who Abraham is. He is no longer defined by his barren past but by his promised future, and the new name is given long before there is a single nation to show for it. God names him by faith, by what he has sworn to do, not by what the evidence allows. And God does not just give a new name; he commits himself, by everlasting covenant, to be God to Abraham and to his offspring after him, forever.

THIRD

A sign in the flesh.

Genesis 17:9-14 ESV

Every covenant in that world had a sign, and God gives this one a sign that could never be casually forgotten: circumcision, cut into the flesh of every male in Abraham's household and every generation after. It was deliberately personal and permanent, marking the very part of the body through which the promised offspring would come, a daily, bodily reminder that this people belonged to God and that their future rested on his promise, not their own power.

The sign was always meant to point beyond itself. The prophets soon spoke of a deeper need, the circumcision of the heart, and the New Testament makes plain that the outward mark was a shadow of an inward reality: a people set apart for God not by a cut in the body but by a renewed and believing heart. The sign said, you are marked as God's own. In Christ, that mark moves inward, and all who belong to him by faith are sealed as his, every bit as truly as Abraham's household was.

FOURTH

And Sarai shall be Sarah.

Genesis 17:15-18 ESV

The renaming is not finished. "As for Sarai your wife... her name shall be Sarah. I will bless her, and moreover, I will give you a son by her... she shall become nations; kings of peoples shall come from her." The promise had often been spoken to Abraham; now, for the first time, it lands squarely on Sarah by name. The barren wife, ninety years old, is written into the covenant as the mother of kings.

And Abraham's response is wonderfully human: "Abraham fell on his face and laughed." He bows in worship and laughs in disbelief at the same moment, doing the math, a hundred-year-old father, a ninety-year-old mother, and finds it absurd. He even offers God an easier plan: "Oh that Ishmael might live before you!" Let the son I already have be enough. But God will not trade the impossible promise for a manageable one. The laughter of unbelief is about to become the name of the child who answers it.

FIFTH

Call his name Isaac.

Genesis 17:19-27 ESV

God answers the laughter by naming the child after it. "Sarah your wife shall bear you a son, and you shall call his name Isaac," which means he laughs. The covenant will run not through Ishmael, whom God also hears and blesses into a great nation, but through this not-yet-conceived son of the impossible promise, born at the appointed time next year. The laughter of doubt will be redeemed into the laughter of joy, and the boy will carry that joke of grace as his name for life.

And then the chapter ends not with more laughter but with a knife. "That very day" Abraham takes every male of his household and obeys, circumcising them all, himself at ninety-nine included. Faith laughs at the impossibility and then obeys anyway, that very day. He cannot produce the son, but he can take God at his word and mark his household as God's, and he does, immediately. The promise is the Almighty's to keep; the obedience is Abraham's to offer, and he offers it without delay.

God does not merely make Abraham a promise; he writes the promise into his name. Abram, exalted father, becomes Abraham, father of a multitude, and the new name is spoken over a ninety-nine-year-old man with one son and a barren wife, a body that flatly contradicts every syllable of it. That is exactly the point. God names us not by our past but by our future, not by what we are but by what he has sworn to make us. The name comes first, in faith, and the reality follows, on God's timetable and by God's power. This is how grace always works: the verdict is declared before the life catches up to it. And the pattern never stops. The God who renamed Abram and Sarai would one day look at an unstable fisherman and call him Peter, the rock; would strike down a persecutor named Saul and raise up an apostle named Paul; and promises every one of his own a white stone with a new name written on it, known only to the one who receives it. If you belong to him, you are no longer named by your worst day, your failure, your barren past. You are named by his promise, and he is El Shaddai, God Almighty; he is able to make every syllable of your new name come true.

A CLOSING REFLECTION

Named by the promise.

Genesis 17 is the chapter where the promise stops being a general hope and becomes a sworn, personal, everlasting covenant, sealed in new names and a sign in the flesh. God comes as El Shaddai, and the first thing the Almighty does with his power is not to overwhelm Abraham but to rename him, to reach into his very identity and rewrite it from his barren past to his promised future. Abram becomes Abraham, Sarai becomes Sarah, and a son is named before he is conceived, the laughter of doubt turned into the name of joy.

There is something here for everyone who feels defined by what they lack or what they have failed to be. The God of the covenant specializes in new names, given by grace, spoken over lives that do not yet look the part, and backed by a power strong enough to make them come true. He named a childless man the father of nations and then, in time, filled the sky with his children. Whatever name you have been carrying, the Almighty is in the business of giving better ones, and of keeping, at the cost of his own Son, every promise folded inside them. He is able. He always was.
